I’m pleased to again host a local Clean Up Australia Day event which will take place this Sunday at the Fadden Pond, Shadow Minister for Environment Nicole Lawder said today.
“Clean Up Australia Day is probably the best opportunity of the year to set aside some time to clean up our local areas. It’s particularly important in Canberra as a recent Clean Up Australia Day report showed that the ACT’s waterways are the 'dirtiest in the country',” Ms Lawder said.
“Cleaning up Fadden Pond will improve local amenity for residents, help reduce rubbish finding its way further into our waterways, thereby reducing the risk for wildlife in the area.
“I’m pleased that a number of local residents including members of the local tennis club will be joining the clean up.
“Fadden Pond is a valuable space in my local area and I want to encourage Canberrans to join an event in their local area,” Ms Lawder concluded.
What: Clean Up Australia Day event in Fadden

I’m giving the government a plan to address the foul odour which is still affecting Tuggeranong residents as they try to go about their daily lives, Shadow Minister for Environment Nicole Lawder said today.
“Because Andrew Barr seems to deny there’s an issue, the government needs to conduct two field based odour surveys, one in February and one in March to confirm the problem for itself,” Ms Lawder said.
“The government then needs to process the data from each survey and communicate with Canberrans about a solution.
“It’s widely believed the odour is coming from the Mugga Lane Tip, but the Environment Protection Authority hasn’t even been able to confirm that.
“If Andrew Barr understood the impact of this odour on Tuggeranong residents, he would be doing something about it, but so far he’s taken no interest and is even questioning whether it is an issue.
“In the Assembly, I’ll be calling on the government to take action, outline a solution and fix the problem,” Ms Lawder concluded.

Andrew Barr still isn’t showing any interest in fixing the foul odour afflicting Tuggeranong residents, dismissing the seriousness of the issue over summer, Shadow Minister for Environment Nicole Lawder said today.
“I raised the odour issue with the Chief Minister and in his response back he suggested that – “landfills and composting facilities will, by their nature, always cause some odours”. This is dismissive of the concerns raised by many residents,” Ms Lawder said.
“Many Tuggeranong residents have been affected by the foul smell, said to be emanating from the Mugga Lane Tip, for not one, but two consecutive summers.
“They haven’t been able to enjoy their outdoor spaces, eat outdoors or work in the garden due to the foul smell.
“I again call on the ACT government to identify the cause of the smell and better communicate with Tuggeranong residents about what it’s doing to fix the problem, if anything. Surely that’s not too much to ask,” Ms Lawder concluded.

I enjoy cooking so it a was a great pleasure to be on the Liberal team vs Labor for the 2CC cook off and even more delighted that my dessert, a sticky date roll with butterscotch sauce, won the most votes in the cook off.
It was a race against the clock to flaunt our culinary skills and prepare a healthy home cooked meal for families staying at RMHC Canberra and the RMH Staff & Volunteers. Whilst we all cooked some fabulous food, I am happy to report that the result was a win to the Liberals with my dessert, a sticky date roll with butterscotch sauce proving the most popular. The foul smell that has been widely reported by residents across Tuggeranong suburbs continues to cause inconvenience and it’s time the Barr government resolved the issue, Shadow Minister for Environment Nicole Lawder said today.
“Throughout December and again over the past few days I’ve received complaints from Tuggeranong residents about the foul odour they believe is coming from the Mugga Lane Tip. For too long this has been an issue and residents deserve to enjoy the warmer weather, without being subjected to the foul smell,” Ms Lawder said.
“The reports have come from a range of locations, particularly in Fadden and Macarthur and it’s something I’m deeply concerned about. This doesn’t seem to be a sewerage issue as the government implied last month. ICON Water has investigated that and ruled it out.
“The government and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) need to determine the cause of the odour as a matter of urgency and fix the problem. It’s been an issue for too long and is causing major inconvenience for many residents,” Ms Lawder concluded.
