Media Release Tuesday 25 February 2014

Today, the ACT Labor government has confirmed that in order to meet its greenhouse gas abatement targets, electricity prices in Canberra will increase by 16 percent, Shadow Minister for the Environment Nicole Lawder said today.

“After touting the government’s progress towards achieving its goals, Simon Corbell has ignored the fact that the ACT’s greenhouse gas emissions targets will drive electricity prices up for struggling Canberrans,” Ms Lawder said.

The Climate Change And Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act 2010 Minister’s Annual Report 2012-13 tabled in the Legislative Assembly today, states “electricity prices are forecast to increase by up to 16 percent to fund renewable energy investment and ensure our greenhouse gas abatement targets are met.”

“It’s typical of Simon Corbell and this Labor government to promote the ideology of renewable energy targets without adequately informing Canberrans about the true costs of pursuing such policies.

“It’s unacceptable for Simon Corbell to only tell half the story. The Canberra Liberals will continue to fight to bring out the truth about the ACT Labor government’s dangerous and ideological policies,” Ms Lawder concluded.
