Tuggeranong residents may be aware that the ACT Labor Government recently announced stage two of the duplication of Ashley Drive, but only from Erindale Drive to Ellerston Avenue. Many constituents have contacted me, astounded that this duplication was not going all the way through to Johnson Drive, as the Labor Party promised before the last ACT election.

Fellow Member for Brindabella, Brendan Smyth, and I were able to ask questions of the Minister for Roads and Planning in the Assembly on this issue recently. The Minister’s reply that capacity had “not yet been reached” on Ashley Drive can be viewed at "Q2 Ashley Drive"

On Sunday 10 May 2015 I will participate in the Mother’s Day Classic raising funds for breast cancer.

One in eight women and one in 688 men will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. With the help of funds raised by the Mother’s Day Classic since 1998, breast cancer survival rates have increased from 83% to 89%. 8,426 families participated in the 2014 Mother’s Day Classic together across Australia.

The Canberra MDC will be at Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park and involves a 5km walk or run and a 10km run around the Central Basin of Lake Burley Griffin, starting to the east and heading towards Kings Bridge.

SBS journalist Karen Middleton will be the MC for the award presentations, which I will be presenting the 5km prize winners at 10.20am.

The Canberra Liberals have listened to residents who have said that better public transport is needed, not just in the Civic to Gungahlin strip, but across Canberra.

This week we announced that if elected, we will introduce 50 new buses and drivers, and implement Super Express buses servicing all the town centres – including Tuggeranong in the Brindabella Electorate.

Too many young people in the Canberra community are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. Today is ‘Youth Homelessness Matters Day’ which aims to increase awareness and support for young people who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness, Shadow Minister for Family and Community Services Nicole Lawder said today.

"Young people who experience homelessness are more likely to experience persistent homelessness when they’re adults. They’re also more likely to disengage with education and employment," Ms Lawder said.

"This is why it’s so important to focus resources and services for young people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness to get them into stable and secure accommodation.

"Some of the most common reasons for young people experiencing homelessness are housing crisis, domestic and family violence and relationship/family breakdown. There are also a number of structural factors which contribute including poverty, social inequality and youth unemployment.

"Youth Homelessness Matters Day is a timely reminder that many young people in our community are genuinely doing it tough. There needs to be a concerted government focus on reducing youth homelessness in Canberra," Ms Lawder concluded.
